Our Methodology
Founder Factories
Data Collection
The ranking includes America’s Top Public and Private Companies listed by Forbes. The 20 indicators used in this model are based on the most recent data obtained from a variety of thirdparty providers during the year of 2017. In some cases, different year spans may be used.
Ranking Criteria
Moving from a series of specific data points to indicators, and, finally, to a total composite score for a company, requires us to match values that represent fundamentally different data. To do this, we used a standardization approach for each indicator and combined the indicators into categories. The categories are then weighted and added together to give a final score. Companies are ranked according to these scores, creating the Founder Factories ranking.

For each indicator, we calculated the mean and standard deviation and assigned a score to the data point to have a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 0.5, assuming the data lay within three standard deviations of the mean based on empirical rule with a normal distribution. For example, if a data point is three standard deviations above the mean, it has a score of 2; if a data point is between two and three standard deviations around the mean, it has a score of 1.5; if a data point is between one and two standard deviations around the mean, it has a score of 1.

For each category, we added up the score in each indicator.

We standardized the total score of each category based on where a particular company’s score sits within that category.

For all categories except for Commitment to Diversity, which a particular company earned based on whether it released diversity report, we used the same standardization approach described above.

In calculating the final score, we assigned different weight for each category based on the degree to which it was found to contribute to overall intrapreneurship. The weights are as follows:

Employee Satisfaction = 15%

Future Growth Prospects = 10%

Workplace and Working Factors = 10%

Density of Intrapreneurs and Innovators = 25%

Commitment to Diversity = 10%

Success in Hiring and Graduating Entrepreneurs = 30%
The six weighted categories are combined into a total composite score that is then sorted in descending order to arrive at the final Founder Factories ranking.
Missing Data
The underlying data used to determine the 20 indicators were not available for every company being ranked. Where a company did not have information available, we calculated the indicators for which the company had valid data collected. For example, the Employee Satisfaction category has three indicators. If a company had valid data for two of those, the total score became the sum of the standardized scores of the two. With the standardization approach applied for each indicator, we avoid penalizing a company with a zero value for data that it does not provide, but we do not reward it for withholding them.
